RE: [MV] Pioneer tools placement

I'm just thinking that in reality the tools were issued "with the trucks"
but kept in storage.
I have no tools in the rack on my truck because I would not expect them to
stay there.

Rikk,

Yes, they were in place, on those vehicles that were intended to have them.
As I recall, most of the time that the drivers were issued their pioneer
tools, it was because we were going to the field for a while. Anywhere from
a day to a week, or so. Many of the drivers didn't bother to take the tools
to their trucks. They didn't figure that they needed them. Many of the
Sections kept their pioneer tools in the Section storage areas. They would
simply load them in the back of the vehicle, along with all of their other
Section equipment. You need to understand that this was a National Guard
Supply and Service Company that did their weekend drills on the same post
that they used for Annual Training. About a third of the people in the
company worked on post during the rest of the month. If they needed to have
a hole dug, or a vehicle towed, they could just call their "fishing buddy"
and have the work taken care of. At a guess, I would say that about 20 to 25
percent of the company was related to each other. It was a real "family
affair". I guess that what I'm trying to say is that this may not be
representative of a typical unit. I can say, however, that pioneer tools
were often treated in the same manner in most of the other units that I
belonged to. They were treated more as Section equipment, used for digging
trenches around tents, chopping brush, etc. than they were treated as
"vehicle equipment". I suppose that I must have seen a few vehicles with the
pioneer tools properly stored on the racks during the nearly 27 years that I
was in the military, but they would have definitely been the exception,
rather than the rule.

How about the racks, were they in place?

Kenny,

None of the Guard or Reserve units that I was assigned to had pioneer tools
permanently in place on the racks. They were issued by the unit Supply Room
when the need arose.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, don't trucks stationed CONUS not have
pioneer tools attached?
