I've recently had this problem on a couple multifuels. It was a gummed up or
rusty starter motor main shaft that would not let the starter drive gear
slide into position. Sometimes I could push the starter button several times
and the starter would eventually engage. I repared it by pulling the starter
and cleaning and lubing the shaft so the drive would slide freely in and out
of the engaged position. The problem has reoccured a few times on my friends
truck. We've been through a couple starters. He's getting good at pulling and
cleaning the starter. I don't know if there's a weakness somewhere else in
his starting system that makes it sensitive to this but I'm looking for
input.
