Bill,
I had the same problem on my '86 1-ton J20
Jeep. Replacing the ball joints on both sides
completely cured it.
I realize that the deuce is a whole different
weight class; and I don't know if it's ball
joints, kingpins, or what; but your description
matched the problem on the Jeep so exactly
that I thought I'd write.
On the jeep, it started above 60, and I had
to slow below 45 to make it stop. Once
or twice of that happening, and into the shop
it went!
Also, if there's a steering-stabilizer on your
rig, it might be shot. Although, if it's doing
it that bad, then even allowing for a non
functional stabilizer, I'll bet there's something
loose in that front end. Kingpin bushings, or
tie-rods, or...
hmmm....one other thought....a friend has an
early 60's CJ, which was all over the road
on him. I happened to notice one day that
when he turned the wheel, the steering-gear
itself was -moving- !
Turned out that the only problem was loose
bolts holding the gear to the frame. Once
tightened, it drove like it was new.
good luck,
Richard
