Rear Differential M1008 gasket or RTV

Hi All,
    Hope Santa brought lots of green stuff, and the cargo bows didn't
get caught in the chimney.

Does any one know how you are supposed to tell whether you need to use a
gasket or the RTV on the rear differential cover for an M1008. The
manual says it might be either one
but I'd like to make sure I get it right the first time, and BEFORE I
start taking it apart...
