motors have 2 external leads, so it's not a problem to swap the one going to
ground; but some of them connect one wire internally to the motor case....

Only permanent magnet motors reverse direction if the power is reversed. With
series, shunt, or compound wound motors (those with wound field coils rather
than permanent magnets) the polarity of the power has no effect on the rotation
direction. In fact, many will run on AC (so called 'Universal' motors). [All
bets are off if the motor has solid state devices in it ]
