Cleaning WW II Canvas

Does anyone have experience cleaning WW II canvas cases with dark colored metal
snaps and leather reinforced corners? The material feels stiff, as if
waterproofed, and I'd prefer not to damage or remove any coatings.

The dirt appears to be a combination of storage dust, some small oily appearing
stuff, and general small marks.

There is a part number ink stamped on the case, which i'd like to preserve.
