Likely any waterproofing has long since deteriorated. The blancoe
that we use on our web gear was supposed to make things waterproof
(or resistant) but its not any more. So I spray my re-enacting web
kit with a bit of scotch guard canvas water proofing to help keep
it's moisture absorbtion down.

I'd say very mild soap and a soft bristle brush.
