Greg, Here are the factors I can think of that may cause oil to leak from
the exhaust.
1) the engine may have been left running at idle for long periods of time.
This would cause oil & unburned diesel fuel to accumulate in the exhaust and
possibly leak from the manifold.
2)broken rings or scored cylinders that allow oil to blow-by into the
cylinder.
3)a leaking turbo shaft oil seal.
I would suspect # 3. I run large stationary Caterpillar engines with a dual
turbo system and have seen this actually happen. Luckily my engines have an
emergency stop button I could press and run. Beware! if the seal blows out
completely and allows oil into the cold side of the turbo, you could have a
run-away engine. Not a pleasant thought.
The Turbo is a pretty easy fix, Good luck
