Hi Eric ,
Yes most engines have a stat, if not the engine will not run at
its proper temp. IS there a good air flow to the rad . Check that the rad is
in good condition , both the fins and cores clear of blockage , to flush the
rad put water UP from the bottom , IF in any doubt about the condition of
the system use a good flushing compound {read the instructions carefully} Is
the fan belt tight ? Check the Ignition timing ! Check carb mixture ! Rad
cap seal in good order.
Are all waterways and hoses clear and sound.
Are you loosing water ? If so where from ? {and why }, is the water pump
sound ?
When the engine is running look for small bubbles in the water as it
circulates in the top of the rad {take cap off} This may indicate a failing
head gasket . Does the system over pressurise ,---- head gasket. Is the oil
grey or milky --- Head gasket. The above symptoms may also be caused by a
cracked block.

The above information is of a general nature not specific to your vehicle
but it may help . good luck NOEL
