Just a guess but the fitting might be AN sized. "AN" , Army-Navy, sizes
were created for the military and are designated by the O.D. of the rigid
meatl tube that each size fitting is used with. The guys in the shop
probably said the fittings are metric because they do not work with standard
wrenches. AN fittings require AN wrenches to tighted and loosen. An
adjustable wrench works in a pinch.
