Subject: Ford V8 problems in Bren Carrier

List, I am having a problem and would like some guidance from you old
flathead buffs.

Engine is a '42 100hp Flathead V-8 mounted in a Bren Carrier. Starts and
idles fine. Put it into gear (1st, and checked no brake on) and it will move
but in seconds the engines starts to bog down. Put in the clutch or in
nutral and the engine rpms come back fine. give it gas in nutral and it revs
fine - hold a high rpm if I keep steady on the gas.

Once moving in 1st or 2nd gear, it might move 10 yards fine, then bog down
again.
Fuel filter looks clean, fresh gas, fuel pump only 3 months on the machine.
Could it be:
1) the coil breaking down under the load? (been upgraded to a 6volt
"beercan" coil)
2) accelerator pump in the carb?
3) sediment in the tank closing off the screen on the intake pipe?
4) some other electrical problem?
5) some other fuel problem?

Anyone had the same problem on such an older motor that can offer up their
fix?

Second problem common to both our unit's Bren carriers:
In 1st or reverse, under a load, the shift lever pops out of gear. The tower
on one has only 5 miles on it since rebuild at a professional shop. The
other carrier has had this problem since before purchase and 60 miles ago.
Don't really see an adjustment for the throw of the shifter. (carriers use a
remote shifter fromt he driver's compartment back to the tower directly
inline between the motor and the Diff.

1st problem is a show-stopper. The second problem is an annoyance.

Any help appreciated.
Cheers,
