The regulator is built into these units. It sounds like it is possibly putting out some voltage, but not enough. You can check the voltage at the hot post of the alternator with the engine running. If it is 14V+, then you could have a broken/loose connection somewhere. Otherwise, I would say the alternator is probably going bad.
