Hi
It is the same animal. The engine was originally a design and product
of Detroit Diesel Allison Div. of GM. It was Detroit Diesel's first
Indirect Injection four stroke product and was highly successful with
its 4 bolt main bearings, precombustion chamber design, and roller
lifters. Millions were produced and they are known for reliability and
great fuel economy. GM later sold off Detroit Diesel to Penske Ent. But
retained the 6.2 and 8.2 four stroke V8 diesels and continued to market
them under the GM brand. Now the engines which are 6.2 and 6.5 liter are
produced for GMC and Chevrolet, as well as Humvees by AM General who
bought the rights to the engine and the production facility equipment
from GM and sell the engines back to GM dealers under the Goodwrench
Parts program.
