Yes I agree, I am always ASTOUNDED at how things we
took for granted are completely foreign to people now.

Growing up, most garage guys, junk yard types, and
even dealer parts people, had a very very good idea of
interchangeability of stuff, even between companies...

Now, many garage guys have never even seen "points"!

I phoned a couple junk dealers not long ago, most were
taken aback by my search for a 235 cid six, most took
awhile and a second explanation- "in-line six", and
some an explanation of "in-line" !!!!!!
...all took a few seconds of trying to figure it out
before saying they never had such a request, while
one young lady at the desk of a junkyard tried to
correct me by saying there was NO SUCH THING!! (with
the obvious sub-text that I was obviously an idiot for
making such a stupid statement)

Damn the 5 and 10 year yards all to heck!!!!

and besides, dont the technical schools teach BASIC
concepts anymore?? surely you have to know the basic
concepts of where technology came from before knowing
where it is and where its going??

\Soon "mechanics" will be able to recognize all kinds
of computer plugs, but not know what a 9/16th box end
wrench is!!

By the way, seems to me theres a certain GM model,
Cadillac??? that when there's an engine problem, the
dealers just drop in a new engine and mail the problem
engine back to GM.

Slightly off topic, I have an expensive home tape
deck, excellent, I loved it, top quality item! BUT,
even though its only a few years old, one little part
needs to be replaced--probably about $2 for the
part,.several shops, dealers etc say, nope, part
doesnt exist anymore, no substitutes for that either,
cant help, throw it out!

sigh,,,progress indeed!
