Old M54 question. Front axle shift

Hi to all.

  I have a question that maybe someone could answer for a friend of
mine. He has an old (1950's?) 5 ton gas powered truck (M54?)
I was looking at the transfer case and it looks like the same kind of
setup as my M35A2 transfer case with an air cylinder to engage the
front drive. (just alot bigger) It looks like the air is controlled by
some valves on the transmission though. Would it be possible to
bypass those trans valves and install a front axle air switch like on
my deuce to engage the front drive on the transfer case?
