One correction on your explanation of the CUCV electrical system.
The glow plugs are not 24 volt, they are 12 volt.
The only reason they draw power through a big resister from the 24
volt buss is in case of totally dead batteries. Hook up a slave cable from
any other military vehicle and you can power the glow plugs from the slave
cable receptacle as well as the starter to fire the vehicle up. Most owners
disconnect the glow plug power and run it off battery 0-12 with a manual
push button which is very reliable compared to the glow plug controller
When you do this it means no power to the glow plugs when jumping off a
slave cable when the batteries are totally dead so at the worst you hook up
the slave cable and wait for the batteries to get enough of a charge to
operate the glow plugs. With glow plug push button equipped vehicles only
use the following start method if the batteries are dead as nails. Do not
push the glow plug button!! give a small phiff < a phiff is about the
time you press a key on your computer keyboard> of starting either while
cranking the engine over to get it to start....don't forget to give about a
half inch of throttle when you do this as not all cylinders will fire until
the combustion chambers warm up a bit. If the batteries are truly dead
drive the vehicle at least 8 hours to fully charge the batteries or plan on
hooking up a battery charger to fully charge the batteries. No matter how
small or large a battery is it still takes a minimum of 8 hours to
completely charge it.
