The first thing I noticed on the front cover of the March 2003 supply line
was the lug nuts on the CCKW. I thought it had to be an error on the owners
part. Years ago I noticed an inner lug nut had pulled through a rim on one
of our trucks. I have always believed the inner nut is not designed to hold
the pressure of driving around and it is in fact the large outer nut that
binds the two rims together as a unit and makes motion possible. With
enough force you can easily pull a small ring of steel loose from the nut or
the rim and allow the rim to dislocate. That would be bad.
Some year ago we had a truck with the big open type rims, not bud, on the
front. My brother hired a new driver and the boy just didn't give the
70,000 pounds of truck the respect it deserved. He would fly up into a
cul-de-sac and whip the front of the truck around with out slowing down
enough. The force on the outer rim and tire would pot the 5/8 studs off of
the hub. Several times I had to repair one of the six studs, once I had to
replace two of them. They fired the boy shortly there after. I would have
to drill out the stud and then take a cutting torch and eat away at the
remainder until I had removed enough to chip out the rest.
My point is it can be a lot of pressure on a wheel, especially a front
wheel. I would never drive a vehicle with out the large outer nut. It may
be acceptable, but why take the chance. Don't let your nuts get you in
trouble.
