Noel, it's the gas temp you're trying to measure, not the temp of the metal
turbo scroll. The metal scroll acts as a heat sink ands spreads the heat
over a wide area, so no single point on the scroll gives you a true reading.
Also, the metal has considerable thermal inertia that will cause a major
delay in getting a useful temp reading. You want to know the exhaust gas
temp right away. Attaching the probe to the outside of the scroll will give
you very erroneous readings and you could already have major damage long
before the pyrometer even begins to indicate excessive temp, if it ever
does.
