I've pulled into the scales three times in the duece.
The first time the officer, not a state trooper, directed us to the impound
lot. Had me nervous and I am a retired cop new to trucks. He just wanted
to see the truck as it reminded him of his time in Viet Nam. He told me
that it wasn't necessary to stop at the scales, in Maryland. This because
the truck is rated at 14,000 lbs or less. Anything 14,001 lbs. or over has
to stop. But, if the truck was being used for commercial purposes of any
type, it would be required to stop at the scales.
The second time they just waved me through.
After seeing this subject several times on various lists, I decided to check
it out and stopped by the scales one day a couple of months ago. I spoke
with a MD State Police Captain and a few other state troopers and the
transportation authority police officer. Their answers were the same. I am
not registered commercial. I am not driving it commercially. Primary
brakes are hydraulic with air assist. The truck is rated under 14,001 lbs.
It is not required to be weighed.
But, as noted elsewhere several times, other states may require it to be
weighed.
