A while back I thought I had a stuck or seized piston, could not get the
engine to turn over. Soaked the pistons in all manner of things and could
not make any progress. After a month of soaking in everything from WD40 to
automatic transmission oil and several types of penetrating oil I
inadvertently turned the engine the other direction (late night and not
thinking), anyway the thing turned over! But only part way, then it stuck
again. Forcing it just caused the nut on the pulley to come loose.
I wound up pulling the head and it turns out there was a bunch of pitting
and crud at the top of one of the pistons and the thing would not slide past
the nasty stuff on the cylinder wall. After going after the grunge with
some emery paper and steel wool, the engine spun over easily. Now repairs
continue.
For what it might be worth.......
