Last weekend saw an excellent 3 days of events on the island. A two day
rally with around 170 vehicles - these included several German vehicles that
had never ever been off the island in 60 years - like a 4 wheel Stoewer
command car - restored from an absolute hulk.
The arena events per pure chance re-united two reconnaissance regt vets who
hadn't seen each other for 60 years - an amazing moment
The founder of the MVCG , now MVT, Peter Gray was with us, his wartime
exploits in jersey as "Der Junger" a wanted saboteur, are legendary and he
was finally caught by the Nazis and imprisoned for the last 9 months of the
war - if it had been before D Day he would have certainly been executed. He
has just written a book of his experiences under the jackboot and is now
seeking a publisher
Our parade in front of around 65,000 people ( most of the Jersey population)
in St Helier before HM The Queen arrived was spectacular.
Three Morris Quads with limbers and 25 pounders did the 21 gun salute on
the beach. The 6 landing craft unloaded a wide range of WW" vehicles,
including the mintest International halftrack I ever saw, Humber and Daimler
armoured car, Bedford's etc.
TV coverage was considerable, the worlds press - even CNN were with us.
All in all a very special event.
