Cleaning a Gas tank from rust ideas?

Does anyone have a tried and true way to clean a gas tank from rust?

Using lyme mix? Muratic (pool) acid? Gravel sloshed around? I know about
the coating stuff, but you have to get it clean before using such coatings.

Any tried and true ways that have worked for you all?
