Esteemed Fuel Alternators:
We suffered through yet another power outage that lasted two hours the other
night.
When Mr. Bloom went to fire up the kerosene lamps, he discovered that Mrs.
Bloom had emptied and cleaned them, so that they "would look nice on the
mantle."
Not having any kero at hand, Mr. Bloom abandoned the lamp idea, lit a few
candles, finished his newspaper, and went to bed.
Question: Could Mr. Bloom have used olive oil in the lamps? Isn't that what
the ancient Romans used to illuminate their debauchery? Would it have stunk
up the room as bad as, or worse than, kero? How about plain old vegetable
oil?
Thank you.
