Sentencings delayed in military thefts
Madison -- Sentencing has been delayed for the ringleader of the nation's
largest military equipment
theft and the accomplice who provided evidence against him.
Leo Anthony Piatz, of Hudson, the convicted mastermind of the $13 million
theft, and Donald Crandall,
of Sparta, the base's range safety officer, originally were scheduled to be
sentenced in May, officials said
Friday.
Piatz is now scheduled to be sentenced July 23 and Crandall July 24.
The sentencings were delayed until after the scheduled June 2 trial of five
other men accused in the
thefts, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Piatz faces up to 125 years in prison and $2.75 million in fines after being
convicted earlier this month
on 11 charges, including conspiracy, bribing a public official and conversion
of government equipment.
Stolen from Fort McCoy were at least 153 vehicles, including armored
personnel carriers, a Sheridan
tank and a crane.
