[MV] Gas Cans & Bridge Markers

Don't know about the gas cans, but the yellow disk is a weight
classification for the vehicle. There is a TM which is titled "Route
Classification and Marking" which defines how to rate bridges, road
surfaces, and other features with related markings. Engineers go out and
survey roads in the operating area and put on the signs. So if your
vehicle is marked 10 and you come to a bridge marked 8 you don't cross.
Simple. The exact details are in the TM (I have a copy somewhere but don't
ask where).

It is the same idea as a GVW rating. Not sure if the same system is still
in use.

Best way to classify your own truck is to find a photo of similar and use
the same marking. Disks and holders are sometimes available from surplus
dealers if not on your vehicle.

Hope this helps,
chuck

Hello List!
I have two gas cans I would like a little information about. Instead if the
usual U.S. stamped at the bottom these have U.S.A. on one side, and Q.M.C.
on the other. One is dated '45 the other '51. I assume these markings stand
for U.S. Army Quarter Master Corps. If so, how did the Quarter Master Corps
rate their own 'branded' gas cans and are these any more collectable than
regular U.S. marked cans? These are the only ones I have ever seen marked
like this.
Also, can anyone please tell me what exactly the Bridge Marker plate on
front of MV's represents and how to determine the correct number for a
given vehicle (in this case, an M43)? I have seen this question on the List
before but don't recall ever seeing an answer.
Any info on above questions very much appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan
