When the cans are stamped on the bottom (USMC), this refers to the
manufacturer of the can. In this case, it would be United States Metal
Container Co.

When the cans are stamped on the side (USMC), this refers to the user (US
Marine Corps, in this instance).

However, mainly water cans which are marked on their sides to help
distinguish them from fuel cans.
