It sounds more like a fuel pump problem than anything else. You can try
bypassing the fuel pump with a gravity feed from a container higher than
the carberator, hooked direct to the carb.
This will indicate weather the fuel pump is the culprit. If the problem
still persists, next step would to be rebuild the carberator. The only
other thing you might want to check is the valve settings. On my M38A1,
one of the exhaust valves was adjusted too tight. When I first started it,
it seemed fine, but as soon as I needed any kind of power, there was none
(at least it kept running, which leads me to think you have problems with
one of the above). I found this valve adjustment problem by checking
compression levels, then upon checking closer found the valve to be
adjusted too tight. Hope this helps,
