Rudimentary rules for installing Split-Rim wheels & tires together

I've seen all of these used.

1) Make sure that the rim is clean, free from cracks , dents in the bead =
area,
corrosion, or any kind of damage that might make the split rim come apart =

when put under load.

1a) Makes sure the rim has not been welded on after it was first =
manufactured.
Welded rims are notoriously subject to either weld failure or cracking =
in the
vicinity of the weld. Rumor has it the rims are heat treated, and most =
folks with
welding equipment aren't equipped in any way to make the proper heat =
treat.

2) put the tube in the tire, and put the tire over the rim.

3) put the split rim down onto the rim, winding it down carefully. If you =

somehow bend the rim or the splitrim, get another assembly. Make sure =
that
the splitrim latches securely. If you are in doubt, don't put air in the =
tire.

3a) A work about tire explosions. In 1965 there was a guy over on Pico =
Blvd in
LA who was putting some air in his loose VW rim&tire. He and his six =
year
old kid were CUT IN HALF when the tire let loose. This was NOT a radial =
or
belted tire. This was a bias ply tire that tends to shred in a lot of =
different
directions. I don't guess anyone alive knows exactly how much air was put =
in
the tire to make it explode.

4) Put the rim & tire assembly in a STURDY cage made for the purpose of
preventing personnel injury in case of an unintended splitrim detachment =
or tire
explosion. Make sure that if the doggone thing does let go, that your =
body
parts are as far out of the line of fire as possible. Think about this, =
and make
sure you are as safe as you can get. Some folks I know with Army =
experience
in these matters indicate that no matter what, you want the splitrim on =
the
other side of the tire from you while you are airing it up. These folks =
say that
when they didn't have a cage, they put the tire flat on the ground, =
splitrim side
down, and STOOD on the tire in in the center of the rim while it was =
being
inflated. I've doen this too, but it really isn't a smart thing to do. =
The tire can
easily shred you if it fails. People with Air Force experience tell me =
some
times airplane tires explode as long as 24 hours after being initially =
filled. Of
course, B-52 tires hold a lot more air pressure.

I knew of one guy that put HIMSELF in the cage, and left the tire on the =
gound
outside the cage while he aired it up. I guess he didn't think much of =
his
shipmates.

Another guy once got inside the cage with the tire, to protect his =
buddies.
He's the one you want around in case of a loose grenade.

5) Y'all be careful out there, hear?

I would like to open a dialogue to address the inherent danger of
changing tires and tubes on split rim wheels. I have seen people do it
wrong and get hurt. Since we have a number of members who have never
worked on these types of wheels before, would the experienced members
please share their SAFE methods?
