Split rims be they two or three piece have one major safety item in common; the
removeable part of the rim is under the bead of the tire. This means that
unless the tire is compressed and off of the ring, it cannot be pryed open so
that it may be removed from the major portion of the rim.
Non-split rims such as usd on WW2 trucks like the CCKW and Chevy are different
and more dangerous. The ring does NOT have a split in it. The ring has two flat
spots in the locking area. To mount the ring, you literally stretch the ring
over the wheel hub. In addition, the ring is just that, a ring on the outside
of the tire. It does not extend under the bead. The tire is constantly trying
to blow this ring off. Personally, I don't like even being near the front ones
(rin out).
In addition, all truck tires tend to rot out near the valve stem opening.
