To answer your replies:
1 -- Steve Johnston: Steve, the vintage & veteran club were made very clear
that my jeep was of about 55 year military vintage. I was told:
"we don't accept commercial vehicles, a jeep is a commercial vehicle"
and there was no more discussion allowed! So no, they wouldn't *dream* of
accepting a truck.
2 -- Ben Hughes: Ben, you're exactly right. The V&V club is full of Jags,
old Mercs and ancient Model T's. Which is, of course, fine and well, but
they do seem to be operating a pick 'n' choose policy. I guess the fewer
vehicles in the club, the lower the premiums.
3 -- Brian Mead: Brian, it'd be great to get those postings. When I started
into the archives, I thought I'd be able to go back anytime for MB/GPW
stuff, but too late I realised just how many files there were. Could you
send all the ones you've saved? Thanks.
4 -- GI Jeeps: GI (?), thanks for the info on 'body sharing'. I'm still not
sure about the tool box lids -- y'see, the tops of the lids are in line
with the top of the wheel arch, but each lid has a lowered lip which
corresponds with, and closes over, the raised lip from the box opening.
Other than that lip, however, there's no impressions or indentations on the
lids. And unfortunately, while the glove box does have its door, it only
has small holes where the data plates should be...
I don't get to spend time with the jeep as often as I'd like (a common
complaint?) -- but I intend to mail the list soon with precise details on
its features, so hopefully someone can help me with its history. (Also, I
only have e-mail access in work, so my mailings and replies aren't as
regular as I'd like either.)
I still suspect it's a hybrid GPW/MB -- is there any record of such a beast
being constructed during the war from available parts? 'On the field', so
to speak.
As an aside, I call my jeep the Miss J, (for reasons I'd be happy to share,
if anyone was interested).
Do any Listers have names for their MVs?
