[MV] mb/gpw rear bumperettes

I just came across a wartime photo of several jeeps in North africa with
their rear bumperettes on upside down. The only thing I can come up
with is that they were KD (knockdown) jeeps and when they were assembled
overseas the bumperettes were put on that way. Any other ideas?
