Compasses-

Hull -single bolt fixing, used anywhere. Late DUKWs, jeeps, etc. One
of the jeeps on the signal corps site photo collection has one on the
dash, the one that is being prepared for submerged running.

Sherril - large - normally on a three bolt bracket, two top one bottom
bracket normally sheet steel. Found on some of the early DUKWs but
later replaced with the Pioneer. Bit fragile and a swine to rebuild
apparently.

Pioneer - large - squarish - solid, could be used as axle stand (well,
almost), normally on a four bolt bracket two top two bottom, bracket is
bronze made by Alliance Br and Br Co. Brackets similar but drilled
differently for a variety of applications. DUKW bracket four holes on
back, Weasel bracket four holes on top (all you M29C owners have a
look under the front coaming above your knees for four bolts sticking
down - dont know if they were on the late coil spring / handbrake
Weasel but Pioneer compasses were standard on the M29 and could be
fitted to the leaf spring M29Cs)

In the UK Chris Wilkinson has / had a supply of Pioneer Compasses but
prices were out of site last time I looked. Mike Stallwood at R.R.
Services had Hull compass at UKP 100, VERY expensive for what is
basically a dash compass like you would buy from any auto store. In
the continental U.S. Brian C. Asbury in Canada used to rebuild and sell
Pioneer and Sherril compasses, it was Brian who told me that the
Sherril was fragile and a swine to work on. Gordon 8-)
