[MV] PTO Winch

I was browsing through my February edition of Four Wheeler and happened
to come across and article on some new trucks coming out. They showed a
transmission with what they said was a PTO capable one, and it had a
strange attachment to the side which I assume was the PTO Thingy
(hellishly technical term, I know). After seeing this and having heard
of several military vehicles with a PTO Winch (ha ha it is relevent to
the list!) I was wondering if someone could explain to me how these
things work.
