Hi William, no secret about a P.T.O, it is just a Power Take Off,
typically a small cast housing with a few gears , a shaft or two, and a
lever to enable an auxilliary driveshaft to be engaged / disengaged.
Lubrication is normally by splash from the main engine or gearbox. A
solid bar drive then takes the motion to a winch. They use the term
power take off becuase you can use it to drive almost anything - winch,
compressor, saw, marine drive (DUKW and GPA for example) It can also
be a hydraulic or pneumatic unit fitted for the same purpose. I
suppose the three point linkage and drive shaft on the back of an
agricultural tractor is just another sort of pto, as was the flywheel
type mounted on the side of older tractors. Gordon 8-) Falkirk,
