After reading all the responses, and considering what they had to say,
and considering this situation, I've decided to hold the GPW for
Mauricio for six weeks without charge. I've also told him everything I
can think of that is negative about this jeep, including all known
flaws, performance characteristics, etc. A person only needs to imagine
himself in the buyer's situation for a short time to realize this is the
right thing to do.
Jeff reasoned that Mauricio was risking more by coming to Texas from
Columbia than I was by holding the GPW for him. This seemed like good
logic to me, so I decided I should be more lenient on the deposit.
Also, several people thought the agreement was too complicated. (I
thought I was just being thorough, and covering all the possibilities.)
Now, with no deposit at all, the agreement is much simpler.
(Jeff also mentioned that the agreement was not a deposit agreement, but
a prorated option to purchase. I've continued to use the term "deposit"
because it's easier to type.)
In exchange, Mauricio has agreed to tell me (as soon as the decision is
made) if he decides he doesn't want to buy the GPW. He has also said
that if I find another buyer before he can get to the US, that I should
tell him, and he will consider expediting his trip to the US.
