Hi Al,
We have a '43/'44 GPW with a similar hardtop to what you describe. Extruded
aluminum framing and aluminum sheet. It has an ID tag but I can't recall the
number offhand. Attaches by clips and screws without much more than a few
1/8" holes to the body. The doors open normal and have machined handles and
latches. The windows go up/down in the doors and the side and rear glass is
fixed in the top with gaskets. The windshield arrangement is vertical, fixed
(not movable/openable) and uses the inner frame and glass from the stock
windshield setup installed in the opening. The whole thing is (was) insulated
and painted nice matching OD. The paint outside has peeled and a little
careful paint removal on the doors revealed Air Force blue with yellow
numbers on the doors. Don't know any of the story behind this jeep other than
what archeaology can tell. Under the sawmill green is USAF blue then
yellow/black "follow me" checkerboard and under that is OD. Anyway; the top
is military and a nice piece of work. I don't have any info on who made them
and if it was a military contract job or civilian design for the MB/GPW
model. Anybody want a hard cab? Just the thing for winter use and we'll even
throw in the heater from under the dash! Will need TLC and is FOB New
Fairfield, CT, USA. I can e-mail a picture to anyone interested & not
laughing (it's OK to laugh; I do when the kids say we should use it to play
jeep year round).
