My friend has such a vehicle. He likes it during snow storms, except for
the 5 mpg he gets.
Transfer case is a dog-clutch style, therefore when the there is wheel
slippage in the rear, the front automatically engages. I think the
slippage factor needs to be about 7-10% before the front engages.
The t/c is single speed, but the transmission has a dual range setting to
it. Can't recall exactly how it works, maybe someone else on the list can
comment on this.
Boyce Equipment offers a service where they can convert the t/c case to a
2speed unit with a conventional lever selection of 6 wheeldrive, so you
don't have to rely on wheel slippage to engage the front wheels.
There is a tendency for these GM straight sixes to crack the exhaust
manifolds.
