Second question: I am mounting ford script tires on 16" CJ/M-38 style
rims. I saw in an ad for tires "rubber flaps to replace those pesky
metal ones." What are they talking about? Do I need these?

Tim:
My advise is to look for combat rims if you really want to do a nice
restoration. The wheels on you GPW are a very visable detail, and I personally
do not think CJ wheels belong on your jeep. I know it is adding more expence,
and perhaps you want to get the restoration on the road as quickly as
possible, you can always change the wheels later to the combat type. In case
you are not aware, combat rims are split in half, and bolted together. A metal
rim was inserted before bolting together to protect the tube from being
pinched. The metal rim is now being replaced by the "rubber flap" because the
metal rim usually became rusty. No flap is needed in the solid wheel CJ type,
so you wouldn't have to bother with it if you use your CJ wheels. Hope this
makes some sence to you and answers your question. Good luck in your
restoration!
