As far as I know it depends on the make and design. What you say sounds
correct for turbo vehicles. GM 2 stroke diesels require a 3 minute
shutdown delay (or at least my 6v53 does). This is in order to run
fuel through the injectors, this cools the injector itself to
below the temperature which causes the fuel that is left in them at
shutdown to break down. It serves to prevent the formation of gum
deposits.
This gum will eventually restrict or even stop the fuel
flow. I am told the pull down and clean out job is something for a
qualified injector mechanic and not the sort of thing to be tackled
oneself.

3 minutes extra worth of diesel each time the engine is shutdown
is evidently much cheaper and less hassle in the long run.
