[MV] M-38 thermostat replacement

Our '52 M-38 (flat 4 cyl.) needs a new thermostat/retainer. Found a
thermostat that will work/fit,but I do not have a good replacement for
the retainer. Is the retainer a friction fit in the bore of the
housing? Or is the retainer supposed to hold the stat in its seat by
exact fit/length to the surface of the head? Obviously I'm getting parts
from a local "old" MV surplus parts dealer. Thanks in advance!
