But the best advice is to know the law better than the inspector. A few
years ago I had to have a Mercedes Benz 300 Diesel inspected in the
Connecticut program. Before going over to the inspector's place of
business, I reviewed all of the applicable statutes regarding my
vehciel. In my case I had a problem with the electric windows in that
the driver's window did not work. I intended to fix it with time but
not right then. My review of the statutes revealed nothing that spoke
to the windows going up or down.
At the inspector's site, he instructed me to roll the window down, to
which I replied that it didn't work and wasn't required to work by law.
He argued, to which I replied, show me in the Statutes where it is
required to work. After 45 minutes of him reading and calling the Main
Office at the State, they arrived at the conclusion that it was not
required by Statute.
The moral of the story is that many of these guys don't know the rules
well themselves and very often think something is required when it is
not. You need to be prepared to call them on the rules from time to
time...
