In Vietnam we always carried the "mermit" (excuse the spelling) food
containers and used them as coolers. They are designed to contain both
hot and cold food. You will see them every now and then surplus.

Later in both Europe and the States I always carried a Coleman metal
cooler on my track that I had painted od and then in the camo pattern of
my vehicle to the field. The General had a real thing about coolers on
vehicles and would demand their removal when ever he noticed them. I
never understood why guys would put a bright red color ice chest and
then wonder why the stuff would hit the fan with the higher ups...

I carried my camo chest for many years strapped to the top of my track
in plain view and never once recieved a comment from anyone. With all
of the stuff one normally carries in a combat load the chest blended in
nicely.
