I've come to understand that many (if not all) M-series vehicles had mounts
for "decontaminators", but I'd like to learn more about the purpose of these
devices and how they worked. My '51 M38 has mounting pads for one on the
floor/tool box roof just ahead of the passenger seat.
>From the name, I'd risk a wild guess that they were in some way connected with
chemical-warfare defense.
So far in my relatively short MV-career, I've not seen one up close. At the
Tobyhanne show last month, a buyer walked away from a table carrying something
interesting. I asked the seller about it, who said it was a decontaminator
for an M-xx (I don't recall which vehicle) but then I couldn't catch up to the
buyer. Perhaps they are rare... I wonder if they were released as surplus,
or disposed-of in some special fashion?
Can anyone familiar with these units help me out?
Thanks!
Steve Johnston
