Another short chapter in split rims......
My M37 threw a chunk of rubber off a tire last month (like throwing a shoe I
guess) so I installed the trusty spare and took the bad tire and an extra
spare to the local truck shop to get them swapped. You never saw such scared
looking people the next day when I went back to pick my tire up. BOOOM!!!
I think they overfilled it because the tire sidewall had blown out uniformly
in a circle halfway between the rim and the tread. The lockring held. Scared
them all shitless. They didn't exactly want to do any more split rims for a
while, so I took the mess home, dismounted it, and got another tire and tube
from my dwindling supply. I mounted it cautiously and slowly, and let it seat
itself on 50 lbs - took about ten minutes for the tire to finally come all the
way up the ring. So I mounted it on the truck to test it out, rather than
just put it in the bed and find out one dark night that it was unsat. Ten
minutes out and back. In the garage, while I was putting the tools away, I
hear a stretching sound, like somebody really fat in spandex bending
over.......
I look at the tire and it has a boil on one side bigger than my fist and
growing!! I grabbed a long screwdriver and bled down the tire right away,
took it off the truck and now I need another tire - darn it. Anyway, the
split rim stuff is do - able if you follow safety precautions and use your
head. The thread has great common sense safety ideas. Just be sure you use a
lock on type tire chuck so you can turn the air on at the regulator and not
the tire. I'm also doing all seven of the combat rims on my WC, too. Whatta
pain in the ass to seperate those babies.
Well, that's my two cents worth.
