<< My question is the colour of the canvas >>
Pick a name. Olive Drab, Khaki, Buff, Grim Green. There were dozens of
manufacturers making canvas products for the govt during WWII (probably
hundreds actually) They made it all to a certain specification established by
the govt but an acceptable level of variation was allowed. There would be
differences in every batch of dye that was mixed by each manufacturer so the
opposite ends of the spectrum could be quite a different shade from each
other. Add in the amount of exposure the finished product endured while in
service and the ends of the spectrum grow farther apart. The same is true of
paint, canvas, photographic dyes, etc etc etc
