Brinnell is the root word there. As I have dealt with Brinelling, the
problem is the bearing race (cup or cone, whatever the ball or roller
contacts) when left in one spot under load will press into the surface
slightly. Never seen a ball or roller shatter however, but bearing failure
will accelerate. Brinnelling is also used to describe the 'swirly' patterns
that can be found on U-Joint journals for example.
Brinnell, BTW, is one of many types of hardness tests for metals and the
Brinnell (Br) is a unit of measure for hardness similar to Rockwell, etc.
See.... four years of engineering school did prove to be useful after all!
