On data plates with raised letters and numbers I have had good luck with this
method;
Clean the plate down to bare metal as best you can. Don't chemically strip
plates made of zinc or they will go bye bye. You should be OK stripping brass
or steel plates. paint the data plate with black BBQ paint. The use an Exacto
knife to scrape away some of the top layer of paint but don't go so deep as to
scratch the plate up. Then a rag and some brass polish and start polishing.
Brasso would probably work but I have used Wenol with good results. Polish the
whole plate, black paint and brass raised letters and all but only use a
little bit of polish at any time. The black paint can be hard to remove from
the low spots in the metal if the plate is badly pitted so if you have large
areas of the plate that should be bare metal but are pitted keep this in mind.
I did the original plates on my 42 and 44 GPWs this way and they look just
like the original finish of my unrestored 44 MB plates.
