I have seen many ex-military vehicles of different sizes at shows and
trials around the UK over the past 20 years or so. Many of these have
been fitted with split-rim wheels. To date, no driver/owner has even so
much as /hinted/ at any problems with fitting original pattern tyres or
their modern replacements. Until I saw your message I had not heard of
any tyre dealer expressing reservations about them other than the
well-known health hazard arising from releasing the rim nuts before
deflating the tube (ouch!). Not much help maybe, but you could try
getting a statement from your preferred tyre manufacturer to the effect
that they have no knowledge of technical or safety problems connected
with split-rim wheels??
BTW When we bought 62FL50, a One Tonne Land Rover 101" Forward Control,
it came with a spare tyre mounted on a split-rim wheel. Unfortunately, it
was a five-stud wheel and the LR101 is a six-stud machine! So, if anyone
wants a five-stud 9.00x16 split-rim wheel, I'd love to hear from you.
