How far is too far? That's hard to say... but I'd think that if it has no
holes it is definitely a candidate for restoration.

I've been seeing some advertisements for reproduction tanks for a couple
hundred dollars, so that may be an option for those with the extra money, but
I chose to restore/repair my '51 M38's tank. I had good luck using a internal
sealing material sold by JC Whtney to seal it . I shook the tank around with
a length of chain inside to break loose rust scale (as recommended by other MV
list members), washed the tank out with water repeatedly, then poured in some
Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone to remove the traces of moisture, then poured the sealer
in, sloshed it around (slowly) so all surfaces were covered, and let it dry a
couple weeks.

A year later, all is still great.
