Strange smell is right. I changed the oil in my M3 Stuart tank years
ago and had not smelt anything like it. Far as I can tell this was
wartime oil.
I still have a sample in a bottle, for curiosities sake.

As far as what oil to use nowadays, do as your manual says. I tried
using multigrade gear oil in my Ferret and Greyhound with the only
difference being it dripped out all the quicker. From what I can tell
mulitgrade is okay in a modern vehicle with tight tolerances etc.,
but in your war relic stick to the manual.
